On a winter evening, the forester Stepan heard sounds under the fence and went out on the threshold of the gatehouse and saw a thin she-wolf. He thought a little, but still brought her some frozen meat, because the forest was unusually empty in winter and it became very difficult to find food for the animals.

The behavior of the beast immediately seemed unusual to the forester. Predators live on their territory, hunt in the same place and rarely come out to people, except because of severe hunger.

The wolf began to come for food more often and the locals even began to scold the forester — no one wanted to see a forest animal in the village. But Stepan did not pay attention to them and continued to feed the animals. He understood that if the wolf was hungry in winter, he would become more dangerous for the village.

After a while, the wolf’s visits stopped. Everyone was happy except Stepan — he was already used to seeing guests and even a little bored.

Only two months later, the forester heard a familiar growl outside the window. The man hurried into the yard and suddenly saw that the wolf had brought with her two more younger members of the pack. The animals looked at Stepan in silence.

Suddenly the forester realized that most likely the she-wolf was feeding the young cubs with the meat that he had given her all winter. And now the whole pack has moved to a new place and the wolf has come to say goodbye. Stepan turned out to be right — since then, wolves have not been seen in the area.
