Our daughter Louella was teething, and therefore she cried loudly. To calm the baby, I lay down next to her in the crib, we both soon fell asleep.
When I woke up, I saw that Matt had already returned home. He looked agitated, and his eyes were glistening with tears. Seeing my worried look, the man hurried to calm me down, saying that everything was fine. It’s just that when Matt saw me sleeping next to his daughter, he realized how much he loves us. After all, we involuntarily reminded him of the story told by our priest. It happened one of those days when my husband and I left Luella at home for the first time. Matt and I went to church for Sunday worship. After the service, we talked to the pastor, and he told us about an incident he witnessed in a shelter in Uganda.
As a missionary, he often visited boarding schools and orphanages around the world, but there was a special atmosphere here. When the priest entered the huge room, where there were about a hundred beds with infants in close rows, he was surprised to note that there was a ringing silence in the room.
Usually, when so many babies are gathered in one room, someone is constantly crying or whimpering. But here everyone was absolutely silent.
The priest asked the shelter worker why the children were behaving so strangely, and her answer was forever etched into his memory. She said that at first all the babies, when they get to the shelter, cry continuously. They express their pain with their cry and call their relatives to help. But after a week, everyone falls silent, because they understand that no one needs them and there is no one to comfort them.
Silence testifies to the hopelessness that reigns in the souls of infants. Children understand that no one will come for them, maybe never again.
This story threw us into a fever. We promised ourselves that we would never ignore the crying of our children. Even in the middle of the night, when I hear Luella sobbing, no matter how tired I am, I definitely go to calm her down.
