Last summer, a couple from New Jersey hired 22-year-old Kirsten Miles to look after their three children. The girl very quickly found a common language with the pets, which their parents were incredibly happy about.
But just three weeks after Kirsten took up her duties, Farrah Roscoe, the children’s mother, told her the sad news. It turned out that the youngest girl, 18-month–old Talia, was found to have biliary atresia — a serious disease that interferes with the normal functioning of the liver.
The verdict of the doctors was categorical: if you do not find a donor, the girl will die. Help came from where they did not expect. The girl’s nanny agreed to become a liver donor. It was a shock for the whole family, because the girl was essentially a complete stranger to them! In January 2017, Kirsten underwent a 14-hour operation, as a result of which part of her liver was removed for a small waist transplant. Both operations were successful. After 9 days, the girl finally went on the mend.
Kirsten, however, needed a little more time to recover, but, according to her, she is happy that she decided to do it: “if you compare a liver transplant with saving a whole life, then this is a very small price. All I paid for Talia’s help was a week in the hospital and a 13–centimeter scar.“ It is fortunate that there are kind and humane people in the world who are able to do good without thinking. I am sure that when Talia grows up, she will appreciate Kirsten’s selfless act, which, by the way, has become almost a native for the family!
